It’s almost TIFF time! The Toronto International Film Festival was founded 44 years ago in 1976, and it has been the highlight of Fall in Toronto for decades. TIFF brings the city to life with star-studded events and exclusive film screenings, bringing in people from all over the world. This year may be slightly different from previous years, but that doesn’t mean there’s not much to do.

Here’s all the information you need to know about TIFF 2021:

When is it?

The festival officially starts on September 9th and runs until September 18th, 10 days of exceptional international and Canadian cinema. Tickets go on sale to the public on September 6th, 2021, at 10am.

Several ticket options are available to audiences, from single film tickets for in-person screenings to packages for digital film screenings that allow access for up to 20 digital films.

What can I expect?

There are over 100 films in TIFF’s official selection, events featuring acclaimed guests, and the Industry Conference; there will be something to do every day throughout the 10-day run.

Screening locations include: TIFF Bell Lightbox, Roy Thomson Hall, the Visa Screening Room at the Princess of Wales Theatre, and Festival Village at the iconic Ontario Place. As well as digital screenings available worldwide.

The official list of films will be released on August 14th, 2021.

What should I be sure to see?

With over 100 films to choose from, scheduling your time at TIFF can feel overwhelming. We have a few suggestions for must-see moments that can help narrow down your search.

  1. Dune by Denis Villeneuve

This screening will be a World Exclusive IMAX Special Event at the Cinesphere Theatre at Ontario Place. The film, based on Frank Herbert’s seminal novel and featuring an impressive all-star ensemble cast, will be showcased in Toronto and Montreal, in partnership with Warner Bros. Canada and venue partner Cineplex.

  1. Celebrating Alanis A Retrospective of Alanis Obomsawin’s works

Curated by Jason Ryle, one of the world’s leading Indigenous curators, this retrospective captures a national moment when Canadians are looking for ways to better understand and access how central Indigenous history and culture are to this nation. Celebrating Alanis is co-presented with the National Film Board of Canada and is definitely a must-see moment for Canadians and travellers alike.

  1. Dear Evan Hansen by Stephen Chbosky

The highly-anticipated film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen is here, and its world premiere will be the opening night of TIFF 2021. Starring Ben Platt, this is a must-see for everyone. Artistic Director of TIFF, Cameron Bailey, explains this film was chosen as the festival opener as it is “ultimately about healing, forgiveness, and reaffirms how connected and essential we all are to one another. We couldn’t think of a more important idea to celebrate this year as we come together once again to share the power and joy of cinema in theatres together”.

Toronto happens to be a central hub for culture in Canada, which means there is never a lack of activities to do in the city.
